Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
A Shared Responsibility for a Very Special Place

Situated in the coastal town of Silloth-on-Solway
The Solway Coast Discovery Centre is the gateway to the Solway Coast AONB.
The Centre, whilst having a serious side, provides a light-hearted and informative look at the environment, heritage, history and development of the Solway Coast over the past 10,000 years. Visitors can meet Romans, Vikings and monks. They can walk through salt marshes, raised mires and sand dunes and will explore what the future holds for the Solway Coast.
Enter the time machine and be guided through the timescale exhibition by Auld Michael the monk and his companion Oyk the Oystercatcher. Discover how the Ice Age formed the Solway, uncover the dark secrets of the peat moss, learn how mankind has transformed the area through the Romans, Vikings and the medieval monks. Explore the secrets of the Solway Coast's habitat diversity in the comfort of the Centre before experiencing and enjoying the area at first hand.
Relax in the mini-cinema and watch the film tour of the highlights of the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The film, viewed at regular intervals on the large screen, was made by students from the local art college, establishing links with local education.
